In rapid response to the devastating floods in Chennai and other parts of Tamil Nadu, India, Broadcom employees teamed up with Stop Hunger Now to package some 30,000 meals in just two hours, meals that will provide much-needed relief to more than affected 5,000 families in the stricken region.
Broadcom Foundation’s emergency response reserve fund enabled 100 Broadcom employees and their families to pack highly nutritious meals that include locally grown rice and spices, dal and provide 23 essential vitamins and minerals.
“We thank the Broadcom team for their immediate response to the flooding that has prevented several thousand families from going back to their homes and starting normal lives again,†said Dola Mohapatra, Director of Stop Hunger Now in India. “With Broadcom’s support, we opened the first Stop Hunger Now facility in India early this year, which positioned us to respond to emergencies in this area. Otherwise, we could not have acted so quickly to bring relief.â€
2015 – Banner Year
Since 2012, Broadcom employees have been volunteering with Stop Hunger Now to fight global hunger. In 2015 the partnership hit a major milestone with 266,732 meals packaged by more than 1,000 Broadcom employees from 12 locations in the U.S., Singapore, China and India, almost double the number from 2014.
Broadcom employees have played a major role in providing packaged meals to victims of high-profile disasters such as the earthquakes in Nepal, where 50,000 nutrient-rich meals packaged by 250 Broadcom employees in India and Singapore provided aid to the victims. Their work has provided relief in other areas of the world as well, such as Vietnam, rural China and the Philippines.
“Stop Hunger Now events bring out the best in Broadcom,†said Paula Golden, President and Executive Director, Broadcom Foundation and Director, Community Affairs, Broadcom. “It is so inspiring to see our employees in every department and at every level gather around a packing table – chanting and cheering as they work together and sharing their passion to make a difference in the lives of those less fortunate. For our employees to have responded so quickly to this recent tragedy – in less than a week – is a holiday miracle!â€
In February of this year, Stop Hunger Now opened its first permanent facility in India with support from Broadcom, and meals are distributed to families through local partner NGOs, schools, medical clinics and orphanages.
Broadcom Bangalore’s Project LOTUS, a group of Broadcom employees dedicated to improving education for underprivileged children in local public schools, has been actively involved in the distribution process. Project LOTUS volunteers personally distributed over 2,000 meals to four LOTUS-sponsored schools. Learn more about Project Lotus here.
“Broadcom employees’ charitable good works have a major impact on how Broadcom is perceived our customers, partners and the community at large,†said Michael Hurlston, Broadcom Executive Vice President of Worldwide Sales. “By participating in the Stop Hunger Now meal packaging program, we continue to demonstrate our commitment to community relations and corporate philanthropy.â€
