From United States to Haiti: How Stop Hunger Now is Transforming Lives in Port-au-Prince

Many of the challenges facing the people  – especially the youth – of Haiti existed long before the disaster struck in 2010. Many were homeless. Children were hungry. Conditions were crowded. Water was in short supply.
The earthquake added to the misery of thousands. Included in those survivors were children who, despite the desperate circumstances, found their way to school each and every day with a hunger for knowledge that outweighed the hunger in their stomachs. Today, Lakay House is home to nearly 150 former street children.
While only 150 street children call Lakay House for Street Children home and eat Stop Hunger Now meals three times a day, an additional 350 youth at Lakay Vocational Center also enjoy nutritious meals each lunchtime thanks to meals packaged by Stop Hunger Now volunteers.

Through support from Stop Hunger Now’s programs, the following outcomes will be achieved:

  • 500 youth trained and applying technical skills at Lakay Vocational Center. Skills include tailoring, refrigeration, welding and masonry.
  • Job creation among youth graduating from Lakay Vocational Center.

“I have no idea when I’ll be done, but it just feels good to know I’m making a difference among these children. Without Stop Hunger Now food, these children will go to bed hungry and the vocational center would close,” reported Mrs. Hougette, Director of Lakay Vocational Center. “Thank you, Stop Hunger Now, for your support.”
